Officially Winter

Submitted December 30, 2015 at 11:45 AM

Now that the Winter Solstice has occurred and there is snow on the ground, there is no question of whether winter is in session. If you think winter is a season of dead color, think again! Just take a look at the current vibrance of color that is even more stunning with the white background.

Winter Flame Dogwood    Cornus sanguinea 'Winter Flame'

Here is an example of a very fitting plant name.

Arizona Cypress    Cupressus arizonica var. glabra

Old peeling bark with a pinkish tint provides a great contrast to the new grayish-green bark underneath.

Compact Oregon Grapeholly    Mahonia aquifolium 'Compacta'

The dark magenta leaves are so fitting in the winter scenery.

Korean Mountain Ash    Sorbus alnifolia

It looks like no one told this tree that it is winter, shhh... let's keep it a secret.

This is just a sneak peek of what can be seen in the new year. Be sure to add visiting Red Butte Garden more often to your New Year's resolutions, it is sure to brighten your year! See you in 2016!
