Create a colorful and artful "Tree Portrait Album" filled with notes and illustrations of trees in Red Butte Garden.
This unique class combines science and art. A Red Butte Garden staff member will present a short history of the Garden and four trees selected for their beauty and usefulness. Participants will visit each tree to sketch and take notes, and then render the tree and its distinguishing parts such as the bark, the leaves, flowers, and seeds, in a medium of their choice.
5"x 7" watercolor papers, drawing papers, and a "Tree Portrait Album" to contain your artwork will be provided.

Participants should bring mediums of their choice such as:
• Colored pencils
• Watercolor pencils
• Whatever medium the artist is happy to work in
Instructor will demonstrate use of graphite and watercolor over 4H and 2H pencil work.
Small and larger 2&3 and 6&7 or 8
4H, 2H, HB, 2B
A blue Col-erase pencil will be provided in class.
Participants will receive 5"x7" watercolor papers (Hot Press) and 5"x7" drawing papers.
Participants can also bring other papers such as colored or textured or Bristol paper. Cut to 5"x7" size for album.
9"x12" tracing paper Canson preferred for its translucency.
• Erasers – Pentel “Clic” white eraser in retractable plastic pen
• Kneaded eraser
• Scotch Removable Tape (blue plaid) available in most office supply stores
• Pencil sharpener will be useful. I will bring one to be used by class
A 5"x7" Tree Portrait album and a portfolio of reference material and exercises will be provided to each participant.
A clip board easel will be provided to each participant. The clipboards need to be returned at the end of class.
Purpose of Class:
To create a colorful and artful Tree Portrait Album filled with notes and illustrations of trees in the garden. A visual feast of information. If workshop is successful, a Tree Portraits #2 in the spring, when the trees bloom, pollinate, and produce seeds. Four new trees and a revisit to the trees of September.
