Smokey Robinson

Save for founder Berry Gordy, no single figure has been more closely allied with the Detroit-based Motown than William "Smokey" Robinson. In the early 1950s, Robinson formed the Matadors, which later became the world famous Miracles. Robinson and The Miracles turned out an almost unbroken string of hits in the early 1960s. Robinson went solo in 1972, creating a more mellow sound and even more success turning out hit record after hit record through the seventies and eighties. Robinson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and also went on to win his first Grammy Award as a solo artist that same year.

Robinson's words mingle sincerity and eloquence. Bob Dylan once pronounced him America's "greatest living poet." As a singer, Robinson evokes joy, sadness and their bittersweet combination with his velvety high tenor. Legend has it that audience members often break into tears when Robinson sings a soulful ballad.
