Greek Theatre
September 17, 18 and 24, 25 at 9:00 a.m. with a pre-show discussion at 8:30 a.m.
Red Butte Garden welcomes the return of Classical Greek Theatre September 17, 18 and 24, 25 at 9:00 a.m. This year the performance is Euripides’ Iphigenia In Tauris
The further adventures of the eldest daughter of Agamemmon. Set in an exotic land at the edges of the civilized world, we dicover that Iphigenia was not sacrificed at Aulis but transported far away to serve the goddess Artemis back to Greece. The story tells of a near-sacrifice of brother by sister, their moving reunion, and a thrilling escape plan almost foiled by the barbarian king. Through a tragedy by Greek standards, Euripedes’ play in many respects looks like the Shakespearean romances with scenes of melodrama and even comedy.
Traditionally, Greek Theatre is performed at dawn, but for now the performances begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre with a special pre-show discussion beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Tickets are available through the Red Butte Garden ticket office at the Visitor’s center, online or via phone at 801-585-0556. $7 children 3-17 and students, $10 for Red Butte Garden members and $15 for the general public. Garden memberships are available at the time of purchase.
