New Blooms

To start off this weeks blog I want to bring attention to Utah's largest native flower, the Sacred Datura or Angels-Trumpet Datura wrightii.

These beautiful flowers open at night and stay open until they are spent. They have a very sweet fragrance and are related to tomatoes and peppers.

Other beautiful flowers you might find in the garden include:

PENSTEMANIA!

The time has finally come to view our new Penstemon Walk. It is located along the walkway between the Childrens Garden and the Medicinal Garden along both sides of the path.

Let the Blooms Begin!

If you're a fan of the Wisteria now is the prime time to see it. They are in full bloom. So don't waste any more time and come visit the garden.

One of our native roses is beginning to flower and will continue for most of the summer. It's pink flowers will then turn to tasty rose hips that are very high in vitamin C.

Time for Lilacs

It's time! The lilacs are finally in full bloom and they smell wonderful! Come take a look at our numerous varieties. Most of them are located along the lower portion of the Floral Walk, but you can find other amazing varieties in the Fragrance Garden and Children's Garden.

Bursting with Blossoms!

Wow! Since last week the garden has really exploded with blossoms. From short groundcovers to massive trees, many plants have chosen now to begin flowering. You can't go anywhere in the garden without seeing a great amount of color everywhere you look.

Inconspicuous Flowers

Inconspicuous flowers are often easy to overlook and not much attention is given to them, so I thought I'd put them in the spotlight today.

Curl-leaf Mountain Mahogany

Curl Leaf Mountain Mahogany      Cercocarpus ledifolius

This native shrub is an incredibly important forage plant for Mule Deer and Elk. You can find it in our Children's Garden, Herb Garden, Floral Walk, Medicinal Garden and Natural Area.

Shameless Plug

It's Finally Here!! After many hours of research and a few edits, its ready....and it's perfect!! Red Butte finally has its own Pocket Naturalist to accompany you through the garden.

Pocket Naturalist

It's conveniently sized to fit in your back pocket and packed with information about the various plants in the garden. There is even a map on the back so you don't get lost. They are available for purchase at the Visitor Center Gift Shop.

New Discovery!!!

On Monday April 28th Red Butte's Naturalist Faye Rutishauser, discovered a plant right here in our own natural area that hasn't been seen in the Salt Lake area since the late 1940's!!! Beckwith's Violet (Viola beckwithii).

Daffodils and Natives

The daffodils are as beautiful as ever! There are so many different types, sizes and colors it's hard to imagine without actually seeing them. My favorite is the kind with the orange throat.

As soon as I set foot on the floral walk today I saw the most amazing display of daffodils!
