Utah Shooting Star, Dodecatheon dentatum var. utahense: Red Butte Garden has recently initiated a 3-year study on the beautiful, Utah Shooting Star, in cooperation with the Wasatch-Cache Forest, USDA Forest Service. Population monitoring as well as seed germination studies are being conducted. Utah Shooting Star is a state threatened taxon that occurs within Big Cottonwood Canyon, comprising only 4 populations.

Penstemon scariosus

Graham beardtongue ( Penstemon grahamii) and White River Penstemon ( P. scariosus var. albifluvis): In Spring 2004, Red Butte Garden began a population monitoring project on two federal candidates for ESA listing, Penstemon grahamii and P. scariosus var. albifluvis. Pollination biology and seed germination studies will also be conducted. This project is in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management.

Seeds for Success Project: Red Butte Garden’s participation in the Seeds for Success project is in its 3rd year. We are currently collecting native plant species that represent the local eco-regions in Utah. The goal of the project is to gather native seeds that would be useful in restoration and re-vegetation efforts at the local, state, and national level. This project involves partnerships with the Center for Plant Conservation, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in Great Britain. An important objective of this project is to partner on an international level with the Millennium Seed Bank project. The ambitious goal of this project is to collect at least 10% (approximately 24,000 species) of the worlds’ flora by 2010.
