Norah Jones

Norah Jones

Pianist and vocalist Norah Jones is perhaps best known for her breakout debut album, Come Away with Me, an adult contemporary vocal jazz album with a soul/folk/country tinge, that received five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best New Artist. This was followed by her second album, Feels like Home, released in 2004. In 2007, she released her third album, Not Too Late. Jones released her fourth album, The Fall, on November 17, 2009. Combining soul, pop and country, which convey intimacy and subtlety, she is not a seductress in the traditional jazz mode, a heartbroken wailer in the country style or a belter of the blues, but rather encompasses elements of each inside a rich, smooth tone. These genre elements have also influenced her songs, though not generally in obvious ways and yet showcase her musical breadth and emotional depth.

In 2006 glamorous neo-soul singer Corinne Bailey Rae released her self-titled debut album, recorded on a shoestring budget while still an unsigned artist. But the success of that album was instant and immense. Debuting at Number One in the UK, featuring hit singles such as 'Put Your Records On' and 'Like A Star', and crashing straight into the Billboard Top 20 in the US and gained a huge global audience within months. And now, comes the long-awaited second album. For the 30-year-old singer/songwriter from Leeds, this meant politely declining suggestions to work with big-league producers or big-money studios to instead co-produce the album herself with the friends and musicians she had worked with in the past to retain intimacy and control. She has shrugged off the huge, worldwide expectations engendered by the self-titled debuts success and acclaim. Her songs, she says, are an expression of her 'unfettered self’.
