Sheryl Crow's fresh, updated spin on classic roots rock has made her one of the most popular mainstream artists. Her music blends rock, country and pop into one mainstream sound. She has won nine Grammy Awards, and each of her albums has charted top 10 and earned at least platinum certification. Her albums are loose and eclectic on the surface, yet generally tied together by polished, professional song craft. Crow's sunny, good-time rockers and world-weary ballads have been radio staples. Her most recent album, 100 Miles From Memphis, is heavily influenced by the south. For the Kennett, Missouri native, calling the disc 100 Miles From Memphis is a statement of purpose, both musical and emotional. Sometimes the musical references—Al Green, Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder—are made apparent, but the album’s eleven songs are characterized more by capturing a classic spirit than by imitating any specific style.
