Just because it's winter doesn't mean there isn't plenty of color for you to come see at the gardens.

We begin our tour with some outstanding specimens in the Visitor Center. At the top of the stairs your eyes should immediately be drawn to our tallest plant, our Screw Pine.

It's About Time

It's about time I posted something on our What's Blooming Blog. Thanks to a lot of prodding by our Greenhouse Assistant and for the excellent photos.

Come see it before it closes. You'll be impressed with how large and beautiful it is.

Pinyon Pine (Pinus edulis)
Pinyon

Pinus edulis is one of 20 species of pine tree that delicious pine nuts are harvested from. The seeds are very important to wildlife and are eaten by many insects, mammals and birds.

In its native plant community, it grows very slowly, and trees witha trunk diameter of 6 to 8 inches can be well over 100 years old.

Common sunflower is a robust annual that grows from 1 1/2 to over 8 feet tall. The flower heads can grow up to 5 inches across.  It is the state flower of Kansas.

This long-lived subshrub grows into a rounded mound with green, thread-like, sticky green leaves.  It flowers from late summer into fall.  It prefers full sun and low water.
