Education Assistant

Salary: $7.50-$9/hour

Red Butte Garden is seeking a full-time Education Assistant. Join a great team and gain valuable experience planning and teaching school and youth programs at the Garden. This is a full-time, non-benefitted, seasonal position. Work schedule is 30-40 hours per week depending on the season with some weekend and evening work required. Position runs through November 2, 2012.

Job duties include but are not limited to:
• Teaching on and off-site school programs to elementary school students
• Writing curriculum for and teaching summer camps and Saturday classes
• Planning and leading activities at festivals, birthday parties and other special programs
• Assisting with daily operations by maintaining supplies, facilities and equipment

Qualifications:
• Background in education, environmental studies or horticulture
• Proven written and verbal communication skills
• Previous experience working with children and some knowledge of basic lesson planning
• Must be flexible and able to work both independently and as part of a team

AmeriCorps Education Specialist

Applications are now being accepted for a full-time, 11-month term (1,700 hours) AmeriCorps position with the Red Butte Garden Programs Department. The AmeriCorps Education Specialist will work with a variety of young audiences. Job duties include but are not limited to:

• Teaching on and off-site school programs to elementary school students
• Planning curriculum for and teaching Saturday classes and summer camps
• Leading environmentally themed activities at festivals, birthday parties and other special programs
• Assisting with daily operations by maintaining supplies, facilities and equipment.

The successful candidate will have a background in education, horticulture or ecology. Must enjoy being outdoors and working with children. Teaching experience preferred. Own transportation is required.

Compensation includes a total living allowance of $12,100 (distributed bi-monthly through the course of service) and an education stipend worth $5,550 upon successful completion of 1,700 hour commitment. Health benefits and environmental education training included. Position is Monday through Friday with some weekend and evening work required. Begins February, 2012.

Seasonal Employment in the Visitor Services Department

Visitor Services Host/Front Desk
Seasonal Position, March-October
Salary, $8.00/Hr.

We are currently accepting applications for our Visitor Services Staff. We will begin interviews in late January and plan on hiring and training by mid-February.

We are seeking friendly, out-going, energetic individuals who are willing to provide top-notch service to our guests and customers at the Red Butte Garden Visitor Center. If you are a “people-person” that would enjoy working with the public on a day-to-day basis, we would like to meet you. As a representative of the Garden you have the opportunity to make a great first impression with first-time visitors while expanding our relationship with our regular Garden visitors and growing member base. The ideal candidate will have customer service and cash handling experience, hospitality experience, and possess basic computer skills. Duties include greeting and assisting garden visitors, collecting admission fees, answering phones, assisting customers in the Gift Shop, selling concert tickets, assisting with events, and maintaining cleanliness of the facilities. This is a part-time seasonal position running from February through October, the hours and shifts will vary. Some evening and weekend work is required.

Seasonal Gardener (Laborer)

The Horticulture Department is looking for seasonal gardeners for our 2011 season (Early March - Mid November) who have a passion for gardening and working outdoors.  We strongly prefer people who can work in early March, can commit to 25-40 hours/week, understand the physical commitment required for gardening, able to work in a variety of weather conditions and be at least 18 years of age (required by University of Utah for operating motorized equipment)

Duties: Exact duties will depend upon which team you work with but can include tasks such as: Weeding, mulching, planting, deadheading, pruning, watering , fertilization, pest control, trash removal, sweeping, trail maintenance and event support.  A limited number of positions will also be available with the Greenhouse, Irrigation/Lawn/Equipment, and Plant Records teams.

Work Schedule: Exact work schedule will be coordinated with supervisor upon hire. Typically requires a weekend and/or evening shift.

Rate of Pay: $8.00 - $8.75 depending on education and/or experience

Previous related education and/or experience is not required, but is preferred.
