Americorps Volunteer
Programs Department

Part time, non-benefitted position (seasonal)

Job Summary:

Applications are now being accepted for a full-time, 12-month term (1700 hours) AmeriCorps position with the Red Butte Garden Programs Department. The AmeriCorps Programs Specialist will work with a variety of young audiences.

Responsibilities:

Job duties include but are not limited to:
• Teaching on and off-site school programs to elementary school students.
• Planning curriculum for and teaching Saturday classes and summer camps.
• Leading environmentally themed activities at festivals and other special programs.
• Assisting with daily operations by maintaining supplies, facilities and equipment.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have a background in education, horticulture or ecology. Must enjoy being outdoors and working with children. Teaching experience preferred. Own transportation is required.

Salary and Benefits:

Compensation includes a bi-monthly stipend of approximately $522, (total of $12,530 for the 12-month period), and an education stipend of $5,775 upon successful completion of the 1,700 hour commitment. Health benefits and environmental education training included. Position is Monday through Friday with some weekend and evening work required. Begins January 2017.

Job Summary:

Red Butte Garden is seeking a part-time Education Assistant. Join a great team and gain valuable experience planning and teaching school programs at the Garden. This is a part-time, non-benefitted, seasonal position. Work schedule is 20-29 hours per week, (Monday through Thursday) depending on the season, with occasional Friday, weekend, and evening work required. Position runs through October 2017.

Responsibilities:

Job duties include but are not limited to:
• Teaching on and off-site school programs to elementary school students
• Assisting with daily operations by maintaining supplies, facilities and equipment

Qualifications:

This is an entry-level position. Training will be provided. Must demonstrate an interest in learning about child development and guidance; a willingness to take direction from the assigned teacher; willing to obtain a Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) background check, first aid training are required. Demonstrated human relation and effective human relations skills are also required.

Preferences:

• Background in education, environmental studies or horticulture
• Proven written and verbal communication skills

• Previous experience working with children and some knowledge of basic lesson planning

Staff Research Assistant
Conservation Department

Monday - Friday; 8:30 am - 5 pm with occasional weekend/evening. Position does require travel during field season

Job Summary:

Red Butte Garden is looking for a field botanist, requiring extensive work outside and travel throughout Utah. This person will be involved with our Seeds of Success project as well as several current research and conservation projects. Field work may involve seed collection, monitoring, pollination studies, field surveys, and rare plant seed collection and preservation. Job requires travel up to 75% of the time to remote locations where camping and hiking is required for several days at a time. The use of a personal vehicle may be necessary, though not required. Candidate must have a passion for plants and conservation, be able to work independently or in small group, be reliable, and have a willingness to learn. Position may require coordinating and overseeing volunteers. Eligible travel expenses are reimbursable.

Responsibilities:

Understanding of basic scientific protocols, procedures, and data management.

• Plant identification using herbarium specimens and dichotomous keys
• Seed collection following Seeds of Success protocols
• Work independently and in small groups.

Qualifications:

Assistant Horticulturist (IPM Specialist)

Job Summary:

Red Butte Garden is seeking an assistant for the Greenhouse team. This full time, year round, benefited position has lead responsibility for the Integrated Pest Management program within the Garden’s Greenhouses, seasonal and indoor displays; assists in implementing the plant production program; the operation, maintenance and repair of greenhouse facilities and equipment; installing and maintaining seasonal and indoor displays and leads seasonal staff and volunteers as requested.

This is a full-time year-round position. Actual days and times will vary according to coverage needs of the greenhouses and indoor display maintenance in-between scheduled events. A regular weekend shift is required.

The position requires attendance in order to perform the job duties.

Responsibilities:

1) Assists in programming and running the Integrated Pest Management Program by scouting, monitoring, identifying, and applying appropriate control options to address plant health concerns. Recommends IPM protocol policy. Diagnoses health problems and identifies remedies. Selects and applies control options for insects, disease, and weeds. Control options may include a variety of IPM tools such as beneficial insects, herbicides, insecticides, disinfectants, sanitation, etc. Special attention to beneficial insect use is emphasized. Tracks and evaluates effectiveness of control measures. Inventories and recommends orders as needed and within budgets. Posts necessary email notifications regarding re-entry. Coordinates applications to avoid disruption of scheduled events. Must be able and willing to apply chemical applications.

2) Assists in managing irrigation of plant material on a daily basis in greenhouse areas, containers, and interior displays. Ensures automated irrigation systems are programmed and running as scheduled. Provides training and direction for staff and volunteers concerning plant irrigation needs and hand watering techniques. Hand waters as needed.

3) Assists in keeping the facilities and equipment functioning by checking temperatures and operation of equipment, suggesting large repairs, performing minor repairs, scheduling and performing minor cleaning and maintenance tasks.

4) Provides leadership for seasonal staff and volunteer groups as assigned, including instruction, constructive criticism, planning and communication. Recommends scheduling of garden and equipment maintenance tasks. Care should taken to minimize impact to garden events.

5) Assists in implementing the plant production program for gardens, plant sales and seasonal displays. Assists in providing correct cultural needs including scheduling, temperatures, fertilization, lighting, plant moisture levels, soils and sanitation. Assists in propagation by seed, cutting, and division. Maintains plant quality with timely transplanting, pinching, pruning, trimming, and growth regulator applications. Other production duties include but are not limited to: production inventory organization, maintaining plant records; ordering and receiving plants, seeds and growing supplies.

6) Assists in the installation and maintenance of outdoor seasonal displays (assigned annual beds, containers and baskets). Duties include but are not limited to: designing and recommending plants for displays, weeding, mulching, hand watering, fertilization, deadheading, pruning, pest diagnostics and control, debris removal, sweeping sidewalks, and irrigation repair. Displays installed shall be approved by the Greenhouse Coordinator.

7) Assists in installation and maintenance of indoor plant displays. Duties include but are not limited to: designing and recommending plants for displays, replacing short term displays as needed, arranging, replacing permanent display plants as needed, debris removal, trimming, dead heading, cleaning foliage, pruning, mossing, fertilizing, weeding and hand watering. Displays installed shall be approved by the Greenhouse Coordinator. Able to lift 50 lbs.

8) Serves as a professional staff member in responding to public inquiries; providing content for garden publications, website, TV and radio spots; providing training for volunteers and periodically teaching programs in the area of expertise.

9) Serves as lead greenhouse staff in the absence of the Greenhouse Coordinator as assigned.

Qualifications:

Associate degree in Horticulture, Biology or a related field, or equivalency; 1 year of greenhouse and garden supervisory experience; a valid Utah State Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License; a general knowledge of plant identification and nomenclature; and specific knowledge of grounds and garden maintenance required. Demonstrated oral and written communications skills to deal effectively with a diverse clientele are also required.

Hours:

Must be able to commit to working 16-29 hrs/per week beginning March 1st. Exact schedule will be coordinated with supervisor upon hire. May require a weekend shift and/or occasional evening shift. Season typically runs through mid/late November.

Responsibilities:

Exact duties vary depending upon assigned team.
Outdoor Garden: planting, weeding, mulching, deadheading, pruning, watering, fertilization, pest control, trash removal, sweeping, event support, etc.
Entrance & Natural Areas: same as above and including trail maintenance and noxious weed removal, etc.
Irrigation/Lawns/Equipment: push mowing, weed-eating, irrigation system repairs, trash removal, sweeping, event support, etc.

Qualifications:

A valid Utah vehicle operator’s license required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills required.

Preferences:

Nine months professional work experience with the responsibility for five or more acres of grounds, or equivalency.
People who enjoy gardening and working with plants and/or a desire to learn more, and are able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and temperature extremes.
Must commit to working 16-29 hrs/wk beginning early March, have proven written and oral communication skills, a commitment to provide excellent customer service and ability to work cooperatively with others, and understand the physical commitment required for gardening.

Weekend Education Assistant

Work schedule is 15-19 hours per week, with mostly weekend (Friday and Saturday) work required.

Job Summary:

Red Butte Garden is seeking a part-time Weekend Education Assistant. Join a great team and gain valuable experience planning and teaching weekend programs for children at the Garden. This is a part-time, non-benefitted, year-round position.

Responsibilities:

Job duties include but are not limited to:
• Planning and teaching: Garden Adventure classes, Sprout House Workshops, and other weekend youth programs
• Preparing Sprout House for classes and other programs, welcoming participants, leading activities with other staff, Sprout House cleanup, and insuring guest satisfaction
• Assisting with daily operations by maintaining supplies, facilities, and equipment
• Assisting the Youth Programs Manager with other activities and events as needed

Qualifications:

This is an entry-level position. Training will be provided. Must demonstrate an interest in learning about child development and guidance; a willingness to take direction from the assigned teacher; willing to obtain a food handlers permit, TB test, Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) background check, first aid training are required.
